change of plan...

Ok so ive been doing a lot of thinking this week and after tutorials with Joel and Paul I was encouraged to not so much look at the lyrics of sixties pyschedelic music and rather focus on the countercultures, racial injustice, womens rights, war in vietnam etc.

After researching I came across the story of Edie Sedgewick, 'the factory girl' Ive always been fascinated with her story of being an underground filmstar made famous by Andy Warhol but it came at the price of her life.
I think this is what interests me so much about her story; selling you soul to the devil.

'When a man gives up hope....the devil walks at his side'

negotiated practice...

Delicacy of line and willingness to experiment with techniques – where could the broken mirrors be used in final outcomes?
Woven drawing could have been taken much further – the delicacy and texture of the image is lost.

Believe in what you are doing – be confident and ambitious.
Pattern in the hair was especially effective and demonstrates ability to express conceptual content through very competent drawing ability.

Artist research –
Vitamin D (Book in library) Experimental drawing techniques.

Ive taken all this feedback into consideration to try and make right the wrongs from np and focus on my strengths. I have had a read through the vitamin d book and have gained some good visuals, and not just artists work but they way in which they present their work which is something i feel i should work on. One artist who stood out is David Zeller....

aquirax uno...

What an awesome name. This japanese physchedellic illustration posters have had a big influence on me. His work is characterized by fantastic visuals, capricious and sensuous line flow, flamboyant eroticism, and frequent use of collage and bright colors. Uno was involved with the Japanese underground art of the 1960s–1970s.

brett is a girl...

body art..

i find this old school imagery really cool it sort of reminds my of hippie culture, like henna and body art. This could be a medium i could look into, drawing on people rather than paper...

seeing sound...

Some substances disobey the laws of motion and gravity. They react to sound waves, every time the fluid would get off the vibration of the sound wave from the speaker it would become regular again but while it's on it becomes something very interesting like wee creatures.

electric picnic...

A few images from an music and arts festival in Stradbally, Ireland. Really creative festival, so many things but it just resembles links between music art and the 60's. The whole thing was quite trippy and pyschedelic.

quote of the day...

'When music transports us to the threshold of ecstasy, we behave almost like drug addicts we listen again and again.'

summer of love...

briefing..

For my Extended Major Project is to produce a suitable vehicle for a sustained focus on a project which will allow me to apply the knowledge, technical skills and intellectual abilities acquired and developed during the course. I intend to produce a significant body of finished work which will challenge me and demonstrate my understanding of a complex body of knowledge and practice. I will apply my specialist and creative abilities to produce work of a high standard.

I will continue my learning blog online which I will use to communicate ideas and concepts, research, show technical processes, critically evaluate and reflect on the work of contemporary practitioners.

I have decided I would like to explore how music captures our imagination. As Robert Jourdain explains,

'When music transports us to a threshold of ecstasy, we behave almost like drug addicts as we listen again and again.’

The decade was also labeled the Swinging Sixties because of the libertine attitudes that emerged during this decade. Rampant recreational drug use and casual sex has become inextricably associated with the counterculture of the era, as Jefferson Airplane co-founder Paul Kantner mentions: "If you can remember anything about the sixties, then you weren't really there."

The counterculture movement dominated the second half of the 1960’s. It’s most famous moments being the Summer of Love in San Francisco in 1967, and the Woodstock Festival in upstate New York in 1969. Psychedelic drugs, especially LSD, were widely used medicinally, spiritually and recreationally throughout the late 1960s, and were popularized by Timothy Leary with his slogan, ‘Turn on, tune in, drop out.’ Psychedelic influenced the music artwork and movies of the decade. I hope to portray this era through illustrating sixties song lyrics.

Before we graduate I want to create a website showcasing my work, and create promotional work like business cards. As well as doing this I need to advertise my blog and website, directing as much people to them as possible.
